Heating and Cooling in Santa Fe, NM

Planned installs and replacements, about 1 hour 5 minutes from our Albuquerque base. Call first so we can confirm availability.

Heating and cooling Santa Fe homes is planned work for Red Wrench, booked ahead and scheduled around the drive. The city is about 1 hour 5 minutes up I-25 from our Paradise Blvd base and sits outside the Albuquerque-area communities on our Google profile, so call first and we will confirm availability. What sets Santa Fe apart is the rulebook: five historic districts where the wrong rooftop unit cannot go in at all.

Heating and Cooling Santa Fe Adobes Inside the Five Historic Districts

Settle the placement before you pick the equipment. City code Section 14-5.2(D)(3)(b) says publicly visible rooftop mechanical equipment shall not be added to significant, landmark or contributing structures. On significant and landmark structures, the parapet cannot be raised to hide it either. The city's Historic Preservation Division says its approval comes before a construction permit. Staff can approve many minor alterations, and the rest go to a Historic Districts Review Board hearing.

A condenser on the ground behind a courtyard wall, or a small mini split outdoor unit out of street view, often solves what a roof unit cannot. Thick earthen walls leave little room for new duct, which is why ductless comes up so often here. Heat comes first in this climate. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for the Santa Fe 2 station show 168 freezing nights a year and about 5,880 heating degree days, the yardstick for how much heating a climate demands. Albuquerque's Sunport logs about 3,996. The same station averages only 24 days at 90°F or above, and the city sits near 7,000 feet, so a gas furnace must follow the manufacturer's high-altitude instructions.

Ground-level placement behind a wall keeps equipment out of street view, which matters in the historic districts.

Radiant Floors and Other Realities of Old Santa Fe Houses

Tell us what heats the house before we talk price. Radiant floors do not cool, so summer comfort needs its own system, and a ductless layout can add it without opening a floor. Boiler repair is not on our published service list, so ask on the phone before booking that work.

The planned jobs below suit this drive best:

Anything visible above the parapet deserves a question to the city before work is scheduled.

What to Line Up Before the Trip Up La Bajada

Have three things ready: model plate photos, your district status from the city, and a list of the rooms that run cold. We diagnose first, explain the options plainly and put the price in writing before work starts.

Electricity here comes from PNM and New Mexico Gas Company lists Santa Fe in its service area.

Keep a closer contact for a dead furnace on a January night. We answer the phone around the clock, but an hour on the interstate makes us the wrong first call. Book us at (209) 563-1270 for the work you can plan.

Santa Fe heating and cooling questions

Can I put a new rooftop AC on a historic Santa Fe house?

Often no, if it can be seen from the public way. City code bars adding publicly visible rooftop mechanical equipment to significant, landmark and contributing structures. Check your property's status with the Historic Preservation Division first. A ground-mounted condenser or a ductless outdoor unit in a courtyard is usually the better starting point.

Will you come to Santa Fe for a no-heat emergency?

Do not count on it. Santa Fe is more than an hour from our base and outside our core Albuquerque area, so we are a poor fit for urgent calls. Replacements, conversions and new installs are where this distance makes sense. Call first and we will give you a straight answer on dates.

Can a house with radiant floor heat get air conditioning?

Yes. Radiant floors only heat, so cooling comes from a separate system. Ductless mini splits are the usual choice because they need no ductwork and only a small wall opening for the lines. In a historic district, confirm the outdoor unit's location with the city before ordering it.
