Heat pump repair in Albuquerque starts by separating normal winter behavior from a real fault, since steam from the outdoor unit can be routine and a coil locked in ice is not. Red Wrench Company tests the system in heating and cooling, explains the result and gives you a written price before any repair. Reach us any hour at (209) 563-1270.
Normal Defrost or a Real Fault?
Look at the outdoor unit first. Frost is part of how a heat pump works in cold weather, and the control is built to melt it off.
| What you see or hear | Usually normal | Call us when |
|---|---|---|
| Light frost on the coil | Clears on its own after a defrost cycle | The coil stays white or thickens for hours |
| Steam from the outdoor unit | Part of defrost | You see smoke or smell burning |
| Outdoor fan stops, a whoosh of refrigerant | The system switching into defrost | Fan never restarts |
| Cooler air for a few minutes | Backup may cover the defrost | Air stays cool for long stretches |
| Aux heat on the thermostat | During defrost, or a big setpoint change | It stays on through mild days |
| Runs for long periods | Common on cold nights | It cannot reach setpoint on a mild day |
Do not chip at ice or pour water on the coil. The fins and tubing are easy to damage. If the coil is a solid block, switch the thermostat to emergency heat if you have that setting, and call.

Why Heat Pumps Struggle in High-Desert Winters
Our winters test heat pumps in their own way. Albuquerque averages about 113 freezing nights a year (BestPlaces), and many of those nights follow mild, sunny days. A heat pump can run comfortably at lunchtime and work at its limit by dawn.
Local factors add up:
- Dust. Blowing dust clogs the outdoor coil and indoor filter, and airflow problems show up as weak heat and ice.
- Year-round duty. A heat pump also does the cooling, so it has no off season, and it comes out of a hot summer already worn.
- Older installs. A unit sized for cooling alone may fall short on a cold morning, and undersized ducts hurt both modes.
- Snow and roof runoff. Melt water dripping onto the unit can refreeze on the coil.
How We Test a Heat Pump
We test heating and cooling, because one failed part can show up in either mode.
- We ask what the thermostat showed, when the problem started and how the bills have changed.
- We check power, contactor, capacitor and thermostat wiring.
- We read refrigerant pressures and temperatures, and check airflow across the indoor coil.
- We force a defrost test and watch the reversing valve, outdoor fan, sensor and defrost board.
- We measure the backup heat strips, confirm when they come on, then inspect the coils, drain and compressor amp draw.
- We show you the readings and write up the options.

Heat Pump Repair in Albuquerque: Common Fixes and Trade-Offs
The fix depends on which part failed and how old the system is.
| Problem | Typical fix | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Failed capacitor or contactor | Replace the part | Low cost; check why it failed |
| Defrost board or sensor | Defrost board repair or replacement, then a test | Confirm the fault with a forced defrost first |
| Reversing valve stuck | Replace the valve or the system | Labor-heavy; compare on an older unit |
| Refrigerant leak | Find and fix the leak, then charge | A top-off alone just delays the next failure |
| Failed outdoor fan motor | Replace the motor | Worth it on a sound system |
| Backup heat strip out | Replace the element or relay | Matters most on the coldest nights |
| Compressor failure | Replace it or the system | Past 10 years, price a new heat pump too |
Refrigerant affects the choice. Existing R-410A systems can still be serviced, while new equipment has been moving to lower-impact refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32. Those refrigerants are not interchangeable, so a piecemeal upgrade on an old system may not be possible. Trade reports going into 2026 describe R-410A supply as adequate for now with wholesale prices climbing, so ask for the refrigerant line in writing on an older unit.
Keeping the House Warm Until the Repair Is Done
We work toward same-day service when a heat pump goes down in the cold, and you can call at any hour. Most homes have a fallback: electric backup strips or a gas furnace. Emergency heat turns the heat pump off and uses that backup alone, which protects a failing outdoor unit. It costs more to run, so treat it as a bridge.
Simple repairs can often be finished on the first visit. Reversing valves, compressors and some control boards may need ordering, and we tell you what to expect. Before we leave, we run the system through heat and a defrost test where conditions allow, then confirm the supply air temperature. You get a plain record of the work.
Do not bridge a long outage with an unvented fuel-burning heater. Albuquerque's City Code § 14-3-3-2 bars them and calls for 68°F in habitable rooms, so tell a landlord in writing if you rent. Other towns follow their own rules.
What the Repair Visit Includes
- Tests in heating and cooling, with a forced defrost where conditions allow
- Refrigerant, airflow and backup heat readings, shown to you
- Your free estimate in writing, with the price up front
- The approved repair, then a supply air temperature check

What Drives the Cost of a Heat Pump Repair?
We do not list flat prices, because a contactor and a reversing valve are very different jobs. The written estimate is free, and these items set the number:
- The part, and whether it needs ordering
- Refrigerant type and how much is needed once a leak is fixed
- Labor for brazing and evacuating the system
- Access to the indoor coil and outdoor unit
- Night and weekend timing
If the compressor or reversing valve is the failure, we write up the repair and a replacement side by side. The DOE's Energy Saver guide suggests considering replacement of a heat pump over 10 years old. A full replacement needs a mechanical permit, so that line belongs on the quote.

Keep Ice and Breakdowns Away
Good heat pump maintenance is mostly airflow. Keep two feet clear around the outdoor unit, rinse dust off the coil gently in mild weather and check the filter monthly. Avoid big thermostat setbacks, which can bring on backup heat. Book a check each year so the defrost cycle gets tested.
We repair heat pumps across Albuquerque and nearby communities, including Rio Rancho, Corrales and the South Valley.
Areas we serve
- South ValleyMobile homes and site-built houses mix here, so confirm the backup source before testing.
- Rio RanchoWinter lows near 23°F by City figures test defrost and backup heat controls.
- CorralesIf a casita has its own heat pump, tell us which unit faulted.
- Los Lunas17% of homes heat with electricity, and 152 freezing nights test any defrost board.
- MoriartyHomes at 6,222 feet see 181 freezing nights, so aux heat runs longer here.
- BernalilloOutdoor units on low ground may need raising; ask the Town about flood-zone rules.
- Placitas21% of homes heat with electricity, and elevation shifts defrost demand across the area.
- Cedar CrestElectric heat serves 23% of homes, and snow can bury an outdoor unit's coil.

Heat Pump Repair questions
Why is my heat pump not heating the house?
Check that the thermostat is set to Heat and the filter is clean. Then look at the outdoor unit: if it is iced solid or silent, the system cannot pull in heat. Low refrigerant, a stuck reversing valve or a failed contactor are common causes. We test each one and show you the reading.
Is it normal for a heat pump to freeze up in winter?
A thin layer of frost is normal, and a defrost cycle should clear it. Thick ice that stays for hours is not. Albuquerque's winter air is usually dry, so frost tends to be lighter here than in damp climates, and heavy ice deserves a call. Switch to emergency heat if you have it.
What does the aux heat light mean?
It means the backup heat is helping. That is normal during defrost, after a large setpoint change or on very cold nights. If aux stays on through mild afternoons, the heat pump may not be carrying its share, and your electric bill will show it. We measure the output and find out why.
Can I run my heat pump on emergency heat all winter?
You can in a pinch, but it is the expensive way to heat. Emergency heat skips the heat pump and leans fully on the backup source. On electric strips that can raise bills sharply. Use it to protect a failing unit for a short time, and get the repair done.
How long does a heat pump last before it should be replaced?
The Department of Energy suggests considering replacement after about 10 years. A heat pump works in summer and winter, so it builds hours faster than an AC. Age alone does not decide it. A failed compressor or valve on an old unit is usually the point where we price both.
Why did my power bill jump with no change in the weather?
Backup heat is the most likely reason. A failing defrost control, low refrigerant or a dirty coil can make electric strips carry the load, and those use far more power than the heat pump. Note when the aux light is on, then call. We can check whether the strips are running when they should not.
